IN the Name of the +Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

(Matt6:9-13)
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.

As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation ;
But deliver us from evil. Amen.

(Lk1:28&Lk1:42)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee ; blessed art thou
among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus Christ.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the
hour of our death. Amen.
The above are always said secretly : then aloud,
And lead us not into temptation ; But deliver us from evil.

In the Church of Sarum Our Father and Hail Mary are not begun
aloud by the Priest at any service except at Mass, when they are
wholly said or sung aloud. And afterwards the Priest fays aloud,
And lead us not. Choir. But deliver.

The Apostles Creed is said in the same way.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth :
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried,
He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead,
He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; The holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.
Secretly: then aloud,
The Refurreion of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

THE ORDER OF COMPLIN

ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE

ILLUSTRIOUS CHURCH OF SARUM.

PREFACE

The following translation claims attention on the following grounds:--(1)it is a faithful rendering of the English Complin Office-- nothing has been mutilated or omitted. (2) It follows the prayer book version of the Psalts, Canticles, Preces, &c., and the Authorized version of the other books of Holy Scripture. In one or two instances the marginal reading has been adopted. In one cafe only, it is believed, has this rule been infringed: the Prayer Book translation of the V of the R of the I Sunday in XL. is “I will not suffer mine eyes to sleep nor mine eyelids to slumber.”

As a translation the following claims attention on the grounds that it is not original: as the Office it has the authority of the English Church at a time when she was free to speak as she willed and as the Holy Spirit led her, instead of being forced to consult the wishes of an immoral tyrant or an unbelieving Parlement.

The translators' thanks are due to the Editor of the “People's Hymnal” for permission to print the translations of the hymns “Redeemer of the World” and “Christ, Thou, who art.” Also to Melles. Novello, Ewer, and Co. for permission to use the Hymnal noted Versions of “Te Lucis” and “Creator Dei” and the Whitsuntide Sequence are the only portions of the translation which are not already well known.

It is hoped shortly to publish a translation of the Psalter and Common of Saints, and eventually of the whole Breviary.

Complin I

Psalm IV.

Hear me when I call,
O God of my righteousness:
Thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble;
have Mercy upon me, and hearken unto my prayer.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour:
and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after lying?

Know this also, that the Lord hath chosen to Himself the man that is godly:
when I call upon the Lord, He will hear me.

Stand in awe and sin not:
commune with your own heart,
and in your chamber be still.

Offer the sacrifice of righteousness:
and put your trust in the Lord.

There be many that say:
Who will shew us any good?

Lord, lift thou up:
the light of Thy countenance upon us.
Thou hast put gladness in mine heart:
since the time that their corn, and wine and oil increased.

I will lay me down in peace, and take up my rest:
for it is Thou Lord, only, that makest me dwell in saftey.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.
Amen.

Psalm XXXI., 1-6.

In Thee, O Lord, Have I put my Trust:
let me never be put to confusion,
delever me in Thy righteousness.

Bow down Thine ear to me:
make haste to deliver me.

And be Thou my strong rock,
and house of defence:
that Thou mayest save me.

For Thou art my strong rock, and my castle:
be Thou also my guide,
and lead me for Thy Names sake.

Draw me out of the net,
that they have laid privily for me
for Thou art my strength.

Into Thy hands I commend my spirit:
for Thou hast redeemed me,
O Lord, Thou God of Truth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Psalm XCI.

Whoso dwelleth under the defense of the Most High:
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say unto the Lord,
"Thou art my hope, and my stronghold:
my God, in Him will I trust."

For He shall deliver me from the snare of the hunter:
and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall defend thee under His wings,
and thou shall be safe under His feathers:
His faithfulness and truth shall be thy buckler and shield.

Thou shall not be afraid for any terror by night:
nor the arrow that flieth by day:

For the pestilence that walketh in the darkness:
nor the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.

A thousand shall fall beside thee,
and then thousand at thy right hand:
but it shall not come nigh thee.

Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold:
and see the reward of the ungodles.

For Thou, Lord art my hope:
Thou hast set Thine house of defense very high.

There shall no evil happen unto thee:
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

They shall bear thee in their hands:
that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt go upon the lion and the adder:
the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet.

Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him:
I will set him up, because he hath known My Name.

He shall call upon Me, and I will hear him:
yea, I am with him in trouble;
I will deliver him, and bring him to honour.

With long life will i satisfy him:
and she him my salvation.

Psalm CXXXIV.

Behold now, praise the Lord:
all ye servants of the Lord;

Ye that by night stand in the house of the Lord:
even in the courts of the house of our God.

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary:
and praise the Lord.

Hymn (H.N. 53, v. 4)

SERVANT of Christ, remember

The font's baptismal dew:

Remember thy renewal

In Confirmation, too.

When Thou goest to thy rest,

Sign with the Cross of Jesus

Thy fore-head and thy breast.

The Cross all sin doth banish,

All darkness puts to flight;

The Holy Symbol strengthens

The Waverer by its might.

Away, ye visions evil,

Nor wandering dreams delay:

And thou, deceiver stubborn,

Thy wiles must flee away.

Yea, thou, O crafty serpent,

Who seek'st by many an art,

And many a guileful winding,

To vex the quiet heart---

Depart, for Christ is persent;

Since Christ is here give place:

and let the sign thou ownest

Thy ghostly legions chase.

And though awhile the body

In sleep may lie reclined,

Yet Christ in very slumber

Shall fill the Christian mind

All laud to God the Father,

All laud to God the Son:

To God the Holy Spirit

Be equal honour done. Amen.

P. Keep us.

Word of the Father, God most High,

Thy Hand creation made and guides;

Thy wisdom time from time divides;

By this world's cares and toils oppress,

O give our weary bodes rest.

That while in frames of sin and pain

A little longer we remain,

Our flesh may here in suchwise sleep,

That watch with Christ our souls may keep.

O free us while we dwell below,

From insults of our ghostly foes,

That he may ne'er victorious be

O'er them that are redeemed by Thee.

Whom here we love, for Whom we pine,

God, working out Creation's plan,

And in the latter time made Man:

What lof of Thine was that, which led

To take our woes upon Thy head,

And pangs and cruel death to bear,

To ransom us from death's despair.

To Thee Hell's gate gave ready way,

Demanding there is captive prey;

And now in pomp and victor's pride,

Thou sittest at the Fathers side.

Let very mercy force Thee still

To spare us, conquering all our ill,

And, granting that we ask, on high

With Thine own Face to satisfy.

Be Thou our Joy and Thou our Guard,

Who art to be our great Reward;

The Choir responds, turning toward him. Almighty God, have mercy. afterwards, first turning to the Altar. I confess. Then turning to the Priest as the Priest did before.

Then the Priest says to the Choir. Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you all your sins, deliver you from all evil, preserve and strengthen you in goodness, and bring you to everlasting life. Amen.

The Almighty and Merciful Lord grant you absolution and remittion of all your sins, space for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Wilt Thou not turn again and quicken us. That Thy people may rejoice in Thee.

Shew us Thy Mercy, O Lord. And grant us Thy Salvation.

Vouchsafe, O Lord. to keep us this night without sin.

O Lord, have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us.

O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us. As our trust is in Thee.

Turn us again, O Lord God of Host. Shew the light of Thy Countenance and we Shall be whole.

Lord, hear my prayer. And let my cry come unto Thee.

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

the Preces are said as above at Complin, through the whole year, both on double Feasts and on Simple even without Rulers of the Choir. Also on Ferias, except from Maundy Thursday till the Octave of Easter; but on all Ferias through Advent and from the I sunday after the Octave of Epiphany till Maundy Thursday, and from the I sunday after Trinity till Advent, whenever the Service is of the Feria; after the P. O Lord, let Thy mercy, follows immediately:

Hearken unto my voice, O Lord, when I cry unto Thee. Have mercy upon me and hear me.

Psalm LI.

HAVE mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness: according to the multitude of Thy mercies do away mine offence.

Wash me throughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me.

Against Thee only have I sinned, and do this evil in Thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy saying, and clear when Thou art judged.

Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me.

But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice.

Turn Thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds.

Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me.

Call me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Then Shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my Tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness.

Thou shall open my lips O Lord: and my mouth shall shew Thy praise.

For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee. but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.

The sacrafice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shall Thou not despise.

O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem

Then shalt Thou be pleased with sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

The whole Psalm is said with Glory be, and As it was, without note. and then everthing is said kneeling from the commencement of the I Lord have mercy, till after the collect—even the confession, Almighty God have mercy, and Absolution; but the Priest alone stands up immediately after the psalm, saying

O Lord arise, help us. And deliver us for Thy Names sake. Turn un again, O Lord God of Hosts. Shew the light of Thy countenance and we shall be whole.

Lord, hear my prayer.

And let my cry come unto Thee.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Collect.

LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord God:

and by Thy mercy defend us from all perils of this night. Through Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God world without end. Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Bless be the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

This collect with the Chapter, Thou, O Lord and the P. Keep us, are said at Complin through the whole year, except from Maundy Thursday till the Octave of Easter.

Every day through the year after Complin and after Mattins of the day, except on double Feasts and during the Ocative of Corpus Christi, of the visitation, Assumption, and nativity of Blessed Mary, of the Dedication of a Church, and of the Name of Jesus, and on All Souls' day and on Christmas-Eve, and thence till the I Sunday after the Ocatve of Epiphany, and from the Wednesday before Easter till the I sunday after Trinity, the following Psalm is said without note, kneeling , for the Peace of the Church.

PSALM CXXIII.

UTO Thee lift I up mine eyes: O Thou that dwelleth in the heavens.

Behold, even as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their master, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress: even so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until He have mercy upon us.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are utterly despised.

Our soul is filled with the scornful reproof of the wealthy: and with the despitefulness of the proud.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

The Psalm ended, then follows, Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Our Father.

Then the Officiant says alound, without note.

And lead us not into temptation.

But deliver us from evil.

O Lord, arise, help us.

And deliver us for Thy Name's sake..

Turn us again, O Lord, God of Hosts. Shew the light of Thy countenance and we shall be whole.

Lord, hear my prayer.

And let me cry come unto Thee.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Collect.

O LORD, graciouslly receive the prayer of Thy Church, that by the destruction of all adversity and error, ###the may serve### Thee in safety and freedom: and grant us Thy peace all the days of our life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

This said the Priest and the clerks rise from their knees, killing the forms.

After Complin this prayer only is said.

May the souls of the Faithful through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

the general rule is, that all Clerks (and a fortiori, the boys) should stand throughout Complin; but when Psalm LI is said, the Preces are said kneeling: during XL. the commencement of the Office, i.e., as far as the verse Turn us, is said kneeling. The prayers for the peace of the Church are also said kneeling. During XL Psalm. CXLIII. is said at complin after Psalm LI.

PSALM CXLIII.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and consider my desire: hearken unto me for Thy truth and righteousness' sake.

And enter not into judgement with Thy servant: for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul: he hath smitten my life down to the ground: he hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead.

Therefore is my spirit vexed within me: and my heart within me is desolate.

Yet Do I remember the time past; I muse upon all Thy works: yea, I exercise myself in the works of Thy hands.

I stretch forth my hands unto Thee: my soul gaspeth unto Thee as a thirsty land.

Hear me, O Lord, and that soon, for my spirit waxeth faint: hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

O let me hear Thy loving-kindness bedtime in the morning, for in Thee is my trust: shew Thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto Thee.

Deliver me, O Lord, form mine enemies: for I fless unto Thee to hide me.

Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth Thee, for Thou art my god: let Thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness.

Quicken me, O Lord, for Thy Name's sake: and for Thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.

And of Thy goodness slay mine enemies: and destroy all them that vex my soul; and destroy all them that vex my soul; for I am Thy servant.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, Who was conceived

by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under

Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into

hell; The third day He rose again from the dead, He ascended into

heaven, And fitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The

Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection

of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

Secretly: then aloud,

The Refurreion of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

AT COMPLIN.

Our Father and Hail Mary having been said, the Priest begins,

P. Turn us then, O God our Saviour.

R. And let Thine anger cease from us.

O God, make speed and save me.

O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen,

Complin I.

Psalm IV.

Hear me when I call, O god of my righteousness: Thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble; have Mercy upon me, and hearken unto my prayer.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour: and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after leasing?

Know this also, that the Lord hath chosen to Himself the man that is godly: when I call upon the Lord, He will hear me.

Stand in awe and sin not: commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still.

Offer the sacrifice of righteousness: and put your trust in the Lord.

There be many that say: Who will shew us any good?

Lord, lift thou up: the light of Thy countenance upon us.

Thou hast put gladness in my heart: since the time that their corn, and wine and oil increased.

I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest: for it is Thou Lord, only, that makest me dwell in saftey.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Psalm XXXI., 1-6.

In Thee, O Lord, Have I put my Trust: let me never be put to confusion, delever me in Thy righteousness.

Bow down Thine ear to me: make haste to deliver me.

And be Thou my strong rock, and house of defence: that Thou mayest save me.

For Thou art my strong rock, and my castle: be Thou also my guide, and lead me for Thy Names sake.

Draw me out of the net, that they have laid privily for me for Thou art my strength.

Into Thy hands I commend my spirit: for Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, Thou God of Truth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Psalm XCI.

Whoso dwelleth under the defense of the most High: shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope, and my stronghold: my God, in Him will I trust.

For He shall deliver me from the snare of the hunter: and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall defend thee under His wings, and thou shall be safe under His feathers: His faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shall not be afraid for any terror by night: nor the arrow that flieth by day:

For the pestilence that walketh in the darkness: nor the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.

A thousand shall fall beside thee, and then thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee.

Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold: and see the reward of the ungodles.

For Thou, Lord art my hope: Thou hast set Thine house of defense very high.

There shall no evil happen unto thee: neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

They shall bear thee in their hands: that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt go upon the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet.

Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him: I will set him up, because he hath known My Name.

He shall call upon Me, and I will hear him: yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour.

With long life will i satisfy him: and she him my salvation.

Psalm CXXXIV.

Behold now, praise the Lord: all ye servants of the Lord;

Ye that by night stand in the house of the Lord: even in the courts of the house of our God.

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary: and praise the Lord.

Hymn (H.N. 53, v. 4)

SERVANT of Christ, remember

The font's baptismal dew:

Remember thy renewal

In Confirmation, too.

When Thou goest to thy rest,

Sign with the Cross of Jesus

Thy fore-head and thy breast.

The Cross all sin doth banish,

All darkness puts to flight;

The Holy Symbol strengthens

The Waverer by its might.

Away, ye visions evil,

Nor wandering dreams delay:

And thou, deceiver stubborn,

Thy wiles must flee away.

Yea, thou, O crafty serpent,

Who seek'st by many an art,

And many a guileful winding,

To vex the quiet heart---

Depart, for Christ is persent;

Since Christ is here give place:

and let the sign thou ownest

Thy ghostly legions chase.

And though awhile the body

In sleep may lie reclined,

Yet Christ in very slumber

Shall fill the Christian mind

All laud to God the Father,

All laud to God the Son:

To God the Holy Spirit

Be equal honour done. Amen.

P. Keep us.

Antiphon. O King, glorious among Thy Saints, Who art ever to be praised and art yet ineffable: Thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us, and we are called by Thy Holy Name; leave us not, O our God: that in the day of judgement it may please Thee to place us among Thy Saints and Elect, O blessed King.

P. O Blessed King, direct Thy servants in the way of prosperity.

Among Thy Saints and Elect, O Blessed King.

Hymn.(H.N. 30 or 57).

Jesu, Who brought'st redemption nigh,

Word of the Father, God most High,

O Light of Light, to man unknown,

And watchful guardian of Thine own.

Thy Hand creation made and guides;

Thy wisdom time from time divides;

By this world's cares and toils oppress,

O give our weary bodes rest.

That while in frames of sin and pain

A little longer we remain,

Our flesh may here in suchwise sleep,

That watch with Christ our souls may keep.

O free us while we dwell below,

From insults of our ghostly foes,

That he may ne'er victorious be

O'er them that are redeemed by Thee.

We pray Thee, King with glory deck'd,

In this our Paschal joy, protect

From all that death would fain effect,

Thy ransomed flock, Thine own Elect.

Hymn (H.N. 32 or 67)

JESU, Redemption all devine,

Whom here we love, for Whom we pine,

God, working out Creation's plan,

And in the latter time made Man:

What lof of Thine was that, which led

To take our woes upon Thy head,

And pangs and cruel death to bear,

To ransom us from death's despair.

To Thee Hell's gate gave ready way,

Demanding there is captive prey;

And now in pomp and victor's pride,

Thou sittest at the Fathers side.

Let very mercy force Thee still

To spare us, conquering all our ill,

And, granting that we ask, on high

With Thine own Face to satisfy.

Be Thou our Joy and Thou our Guard,

Who art to be our great Reward;

Our glory and our boast in Thee,

For ever and ever be.

All glory , Lord, to Thee we pay,

Ascending o'er the stars to-day;

All glory as is ever meet,

To Father and to Paraclete. Amen.

Keep us.

Amen.
